Methodology

Two rural areas in Brandenburg have been selected to conduct the research for the project. The first region is located in the south of the Fläming and consists of the municipalitie Dahme/Mark and Niederer Fläming. These two municipalities already were part of the forerunner survey on social acceptance of wind energy in 2005. The data assembled in the recent survey allows for a time series analysis in combination with the data gained from the previous survey in 2005, comparing attitudes of regional inhabitants back then and now and allowing conclusions about changes in the acceptance. The municipality Uebigau-Wahrenbrück is the second study area. In this region, coal mining was a prosperous and important industry, which might lead to a measurable influence of this distinct historical background on the acceptance of wind energy development.

As a survey method, questionnaires were distributed to collect quantitative and qualitative data. In case of Dahme/Mark and Niederer Fläming, most of the questions from 2005 have been adopted to the new questionnaires for 2016 to allow time series analysis. Questions for Uebigau-Wahrenbrück are partly added, deleted or edited to measure the impact of the municipality’s specific historical characteristics, as explained in the section Uebigau-Wahrenbrück Questionnaire design. Geographic data regarding wind turbines are acquired through GIS (Geographic Information System).

After collecting the data, results are described using a frequency analysis, followed by correlation analysis and sub-sampling as methods of analysis. The measurment of current social acceptance of wind energy and the time series analysis are based on frequency analysis. Correlation analysis was used to clarify the significance of the relation between social acceptance of wind energy and influential factors. Subsampling analysis was used to identify detailed characteristics of specific groups of people, for example representatives of a NIMBY attitude and/or general opponents of wind energy usage.
